Optometry is a mix of both medical examination and the filling of your prescriptions. Through a detailed history, your concerns will drive the exam and the the results reveals your needs.
The Glaucoma Exam:
While glaucoma may develop in individuals with or without elevated eye pressure, reducing the pressure in the eye is the only proven way to stop or slow glaucoma. We therefore, pay close attention to not only the intraocular pressure but also the optic nerve head by means of ultrasound, photography and visual field testing.
The Diabetic Exam:
Rising blood sugar will lead to changes in the glass prescription. When fluctuations become too great we will be need to wait for your sugar levels to return to normal before we can accurately wright your glasses prescription. All diabetics require a dilated eye exam to rule out retinopathy (bleeding in the back of the eye), which is the leading cause of blindness. We then notify your primary care doctor of your results.
The Plaquinel Exam:
Plaquinel (Chloroquine) is used in the treatment of arthritis. In high doses or over ten years of use, you can start to changes to the pigmented cells beneath the retinal nerves which will lead to decreased vision. Annual dilated eye exams will allow us to monitor your health.
The Pediatric Exam:
Children often do not know what is abnormal and therefore may have significant problems they would not think to tell you about. We pay special attention to ocular motilities and saccades as well as binocularity, accommodation and body stance to descern imbalances the alignment of the eyes.
